Honor
I’ve been thinking about honor lately. So I looked up a few scriptures to see what the Bible had to say about it.
Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
1 Peter 2:17
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Romans 12:10
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.
1 Timothy 5:17
that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
John 5:23
“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise
Ephesians 6:2
We see Daniel honor King after King, good and bad. We see him positioned for blessing over and over again.
We see David honor Saul, even when he did not deserve it. And God blessed him in amazing ways.
We see Ruth honor Naomi, and end up with a whole new life.
We see Sarah honor Abraham and live in the promises of God.
We see Solomon honor his mother, and he had wisdom beyond any other.
We see honor bring blessings over and over again.
I heard Michael Todd say once, “Respect is earned, honor is given.”
And one of the things I’ve been drawn to about his ministry is the way he honors others. His parents, the former Pastors of his church, the leaders who serve at TC. I’ve seen him honor others, and above all, I’ve seen him honor God. And TC is greatly blessed.
How are we doing on the honor department? I know I need to take a look in the mirror. I know I could better honor my husband, my father, and honestly…just people in general.
I need to be reminded that every single person on the planet was made in the image of God. I need to consider the fact that Jesus gave his life for every person. God breathed His breath into the lungs of every person…He hand crafted each one in their mothers womb. He knew them before they were born.
How would I interact with others if I saw each one this way? Would I give honor more easily? Would you? Are we willing to?
Father, will You begin to show me others the way that You see them? Will you help me to honor others as children of God? In Jesus name, amen.
