Boy have I seen God do this in my own life. As a young person, my heart desired everything of this world. My spirit was not aligned with God’s in any way. It didn’t alert me when I was exposing myself to ungodliness. My old heart and my old spirit allowed me to consume things which led me on a path to eternal destruction and damnation. Pretty strong statement, huh? It’s true, though. It really is. When we hunger for and are satiated with the things of this world our spirit ends up dead and lost. But when we run to Jesus He puts a new heart and a new spirit in us. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says that we are new creations in Christ and the old us is gone. The new heart He gives us begins to desire Him and the things that point us to Him. The new spirit begins to alert us when we are filling up on things that are not good for us. Why? Because when we choose to follow Christ, the one who loves us beyond what we can fathom, the Holy Spirit resides inside of us…and that changes everything.
Perhaps you are watching someone you love run after the desires of their heart that are the opposite of what God would want. Maybe your heart breaks as you pray for their spirit to warn them of the dangers ahead. I struggled with seeing my son choose everything but God. In my brokenness I cried out to God to rescue him. I asked for a new heart and a new spirit for this boy that I love so deeply, knowing full well that God loves him even more. Who do you need to pray for today? Your child? Your parents? A friend? Or is it you? There’s a brand new heart and brand new spirit waiting to be had.

Lord Jesus, I can see the need for a softened heart, a heart that desires what You love. I can see a need for a spirit that is led by Yours, a spirit that stops us from stepping into sin and destruction. I know that ____________ needs these things right now. Would you put a new heart in ________ today, Lord? One that feels what You feel, loves what You love and wants what You want. Would you give them/me a new spirit? One that is in tune with your plan and your will. One that is led by Your Holy Spirit into Your purpose. In Jesus name.
